In the past decade, the city of Toronto has been making extreme strides in the music scene. Since the emergence of artists like Drake, The Weeknd, MSTRKRFT, PartyNextDoor, River Tiber, Charlotte Day Wilson (the list could go on), more and more talented young and organic artists have been moving their way through the trenches of the ever-so competitive music industry.
I want to focus on another incredible voice that has already begun creating a name for herself. Her name is Liz Loughrey. With over a million views on her YouTube page alone, Liz is continuing to grow her sound and base with each new song she creates.
The Millennial was fortunate enough to conduct an interview with Liz to gain a better understanding of this new emerging artist and also the mindset behind the empowering and inspiring music she is creating.
Liz recently put out visuals for her newest single “Rise Up!”, a song that is a beacon for positive change. She and her team at Project Light Agency are spreading a movement, a movement that is calling for individuals to take the initiative and move past a complacent lifestyle many find common in today’s society.
This movement is about telling the stories of people who are positively impacting the world and encouraging individuals to rise up in their communities.
What made you get into creating music?
“Each of us were put on this Earth to create in some way, shape, or form and music is my personal avenue to do that. It started when I fell in love with the stage. I realized, “This is where I can express myself, and this is where I feel most alive.”
What problem are you solving with your music?
“Well, personally I find that writing and singing about life’s ups and downs is healing. Art is a unique way to process and feel unlike any other, so it helps me solve my own problems (or at least some of them.)
It’s all about feeling, and hopefully my music will make those who hear it feel something too. I hope it causes them to feel united within themselves, and with the world around them.”
What was the toughest decision you had to make in the last few months?
“I can’t think of one in specific, but lately I’ve challenged myself to make decisions based on my intuition. Trusting my gut instead of overthinking things. Easier said than done, but I think we can all make an effort to let our hearts lead the way.”
How do you stay motivated day in and day out to push your message and create your music?
“I have great days and days where I wonder what my next move will be, days where it feels like all the doors are wide open and others when it seems they’re all locked. Overall it’s my desire to share this with the world and my love for music that keeps me positive and focused.”
What have you learned most while creating your music?
“So much! But mostly patience. Patience with myself, the people closest to me, and with the process of creating itself! It takes time but looking back on this journey, it’s already been an incredible one.”
What is your message to anyone out there looking to start their own business or career?
“Know yourself! Know your values, desires, strengths, weaknesses, gifts, inspirations and your market. It’s so important to stay true to those things and discover how those qualities can contribute to whatever industry you are in. I guess what I’m referring to is branding. The clearer you are about your product, the easier it will be for your audience to invest in, get to know and hopefully love you! :)”
Liz mentions patience and I couldn’t agree more with her. Whether it’s creating music or creating an app, starting up your own business, most people think with the mindset of instant gratification – if results aren’t immediate we tend to often pause all efforts or stop entirely.
This is why the emphasis on doing something you truly love is important. As long as you’re doing that, your patience is then turned into the process of what we call the journey.
Liz has taken the message further by creating “Rise Up” workshops, where she visits schools across the country – encouraging our youth to “think outside the box” and start making their own positive impact in their communities.
