“I’ve always loved music, been a fan of music, and music has always been a part of my life.”
Have you ever sat down and contemplated why it is you like the music you do? There are so many genres and styles of music that it’s almost impossible to find something that you can’t relate to.
So I ask the question again: why do you like the music you listen to today?“I honestly just love listening to music with high energy and positive vibes. As far as why I love creating music, it’s a way that I can express myself, my thoughts, and emotions in a more creative and fun way than just saying how I feel in a sentence. I just like being gnarly,” said YXNG RARI.
YXNG RARI (pronounced “Young Rari”) is a 25 year old North Carolina native who grew up with the embracing presence of music. “From when I learned how to play piano and did recitals from the age of 8-12, to playing trombone and alto saxophone in middle school, to rapping for fun with friends back in high school and during my first two years of college,” RARI was always sure of his passion for music. If you haven’t already caught on to the inspiration for this site, I too have a burning attraction to music – all styles, sounds, and genres. The best part about music is that there is a mutual feeling that everyone can relate with. No matter the color of skin, your gender, your socioeconomic status; we can all come together with the help of music.
This is because music puts the listener in a position where they too can empathize and rationalize with what an artist is saying through their lyrics. RARI enlightened me with the intentions of his music and what he is trying to do for the everyday listener like you and me: “When it comes to what I look to do for people with music, I just want to make fun and carefree music, that not only represents my personal beliefs, values, and things I care about… but is also music that makes people feel energized and want to have fun.
I want listening to my music to be a fun experience, to make people excited about going out on that Friday or Saturday night and just get gnarly, living in the moment with their friends and making memories. I don’t consider myself a rapper though, rather someone who just uses vocals to create gnarly experiences to high energy beats. Just to reiterate, this isn’t rap, this is gnarly music, ‘RARI Sounds.’”
Every aspiring musician has a foundation of artist they idolize and take inspiration from. I asked RARI who some of his favorite artist are that have inspired him to pursue what he loves to do. “Artists in the past that influenced me, I’d say, are Jimi Hendrix, Eminem, Tupac, Big L, and of course Jay-Z. The reason why I named them is because not only are they legends, but they all had/have this quality of being unapologetically themselves. You have to respect that. You have to admire anyone who is willing to do what they believe in, and stand for it, and not apologize for being themselves instead of trying to fit a mold that others say they should fit.”
Being yourself is such a simple concept but complex to master. It can be as easy as telling yourself what to believe in, where you come from, or what you’re passionate about. Growing up in the social media and technology era, it’s very easy to lose sight of who a person really is – seeing as we have such a variety of factors that can pioneer and dilute our way of thinking. And how can you blame it? You’ve got parents telling you one thing, your friends telling you another, and then on top of that, the media only fans the flames of confusion.
I asked RARI who some of the present artist are that have influenced him to pursue his style of music.
“As far as present artists that I feel influence me, I’d say Future, Kanye West, Drake, TI, Gucci Mane, as well as my bro Party Thieves. In regards to producers that I enjoy listening to, as well as creating songs to their beats, I’d say Maaly Raw, Avery, BigBlazee, TM88, Metro Boomin, DJ Esco, and Slade Da Monsta are my current favorites. All of the aforementioned artists have a southern, trap sound… whether it’s in their production, or actual lyrical content.” Being from the south, RARI has a strong appeal to the style of music that takes precedence here.
“I love trap music, love the ATL inspired trap sounds that drive a majority of southern based artists, and the energy that comes with that sub-genre of rap has definitely influenced me as far as my creativity and the types of beats I like to create music to. Still, since I’m from NC, I wanted to take some of the ATL influence and create something slightly different.”
I continued further, looking to get a better understanding for who RARI is. With us being from the same hometown, we were able to find common ground outside of just music. We have similar friends; we knew where the hangout spots were; I wanted to know RARI’s story more than anything.
“For people who don’t know me… my artist name is YXNG RARI (pronounced “Young Rari”). I’m from Raleigh, NC, I moved to New York to attend college, and then moved to Texas. When I’m not creating music, I love going to music events and hanging out with fellow creative types. Some of the fellow creatives that helped put me on to the music scene in my current city are my friends, Myke, Jason, Rob, and Jonathan, so shout out to them. Two words you could use to describe me would be “eccentric” and “gnarly.” I just live life and have fun balancing between being carefree and handling my responsibilities.”
He told me that he was juggling both school and rapping but ended up putting the rhyming on pause in 2012. It was in 2016 that he started to pick up the pen and pad again and start getting back to the grind of making fun-inspired music.
“It wasn’t until I came to visit my college classmate and good friend, Party Thieves, play a show in Dallas back in November 2015, that I remembered how awesome it is to see a group of people vibe with something you’ve created, that raw energy that comes from that. Seeing how music impacts people from all walks of life and backgrounds made me definitely miss making music. I decided at that moment that I would start making music again and just see where things would go.”
“I’ve currently been making music for about 9 months, after taking a 4 year break, so I definitely am continuing to work to improve as an artist, and I want to continue networking with other artists, producers, and creative types to not only get my sound out, but to also just bounce ideas off of others. Ultimately, I believe that every song I make should be better than the song I made before it, in order to keep myself from becoming complacent and to remember that I can always get better.”
In RARI’s short span of creating music, he’s already released three new singles; “Canada” featuring Dav Baynga and produced by Maaly Raw, being the single that just dropped today.
